Fatima Sana Shaikh is a freshly talented newbie in B-town who was recently seen in blockbusters like Dangal and Thugs of Hindostan alongside some supremo celebs like Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Although, Shaikh made her Bollywood debut in 1997 with Chachi 420 at just 6 years old, her career underwent a temporary hiatus from 2013 to 2016 until she landed the role of Geeta Phogat in Dangal. Dangal literally marked her come back into the industry after which she has attained new levels of success and fame. Ever since then, Shaikh has endorsed multiple brands and has become the face of many fashion magazines without looking back.
Fatima was born on 11 January 1992 in Mumbai, India and as of today she is 26 years old. She is 5’7″ tall and weighs around 50 Kg.
Although Fatima has been born and brought up in Mumbai, she is of Jammu & Kashmir descent. Her father Vipan Sharma belongs to Jammu and is Brahmin by caste. Whereas her mother, Raj Tabassum is a Kashmiri Muslim. Most of her paternal family still resides in Jammu and Fatima keeps visiting her family members regularly. In a recent interview, she spoke about her widespread fame in Jammu & Kashmir and that she is proud to be an Indian (source). Even though both her parents are of different religions, Fatima chooses to follow Islam which is observable in her name and her religious sentiments.
Fatima completed her schooling from St. Xavier’s High School, Mumbai and completed her graduation from Mithibai College, Mumbai. She later went on to resume her career in acting and little did she know that in coming times she’d be working alongside celebs like Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan.
Ever since she was a kid, Fatima was always fond of acting and debuted in Kamal Hassan’s Chachi 420 at just 6 years old. She starred alongside Kamal Hassan, Tabu and Amrish Puri and played the daughter of Jaiprakash Paswan and Janki Paswan’s (Kamal Hassan and Tabu’s characters) daughter, Bharti.
In 2001, Fatima landed her second role in One 2 ka 4 alongside Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and Jackie Shroff where she played the daughter of Jackie Shroff’s character. Performed with impeccable perfection, Fatima’s role was of supporting actor and her role went uncredited.
In 2008, Fatima starred in the Indian drama film Tahaan which is about the grim reality of war set in the foothills of Kashmir. She played a short role of Zoya and did not receive the recognition she was hoping for. After this, Fatima shifted her focus to television. Her first TV show was Ladies Special on Sony Entertainment where she played the daughter of show’s protagonist Shilpa Tulaskar. The show revolved around 3 lead female characters who met in Mumbai local regularly to discuss about their lives and problems. Fatima’s performance in the show was quite remarkable for which she received recognition and positive feedback.
In 2009 she again starred in a famous TV serial Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo on Zee Tv where she played her first ever negative role, Suman. Gradually she landed roles in movies like Bittoo Boss (2012) and Aakash Vani (2013) but failed to make an impression on the audience.
It was during this time that Fatima decided to go on a temporary Hiatus from acting and took up cinematography instead. She revealed all about her jobless years on the show Koffee With Karan where she appeared with Aamir Khan and Sanya Malhotra. Her career took a steep turn after she auditioned for Aamir Khan’s Dangal in 2015 and finally landed the role of Indian Commonwealth Gold Medalist, Geeta Phogat after 6 rounds of auditioning. Today she is widely acclaimed as the ‘Dangal Girl’.
Her recent hit was Thugs of Hindostan (hereafter TOH), produced under the banner of Yash Raj Films where she co-starred with Aamir Khan once again. The movie is based on the English novel Confessions of a Thug (1839) by Philip Meadows Taylor which is based on the ‘Thugs’ of British India and their tales of deception. Shaikh’s character in the movie was a warrior-archer thug, named Zafira Baig for which she received overall positive reviews. Although TOH was not as big a hit as it was anticipated due to its unique storyline and biggie star cast, the movie is one of the most expensive movies ever made in Bollywood.
Recently she was featured in Elle India along with her close friend and Dangal co-star, Sanya Malhotra. Both of them turned heads with their versatile beautiful looks.
Relationships and Rumours
Not much is known about Fatima’s love life as the star likes to keep herself low profile but after her Dangal fame, the star was linked to her co-star Aamir Khan quite frequently. The rumours became so rampant that it was speculated whether Kiran Rao, upset with the whole scenario, was about to divorce her husband. While neither Khan nor Shaikh openly denied, the rumours soon waned in thin air.
