Moving to a new place is almost like planning a wedding. You’re full of enthusiasm and anticipation, but it can feel totally overpowering unless you take the process one little step at a time.

4-6 Weeks BeforeThe Moving Day

  • Sign up for a moving company and choose carefully.
  • Prepare your budget, avail a written quote and create moving transit insurance.
  • Arrange contents and household Insurance for your new residence.
  • Inform the Electoral Office of your new address. Also, get your Drivers Licence modified accordingly.

  • Make a SURVIVAL KIT (LOAD LAST) with snacks, tea, coffee, breakfast requirements, special children’s toys, school needs, pet needs, bathroom essentials, telephone handset, medical kit, scissors, corkscrew, spare light globes, tools, toilet paper.
  • Make an inventory list of each carton. Mark clearly FRAGILE. Note all dents and scratches.
  • Pack lighter items in big cartons, heavier items in small cartons and keep heavier items at the bottom.
  • Disassemble furniture that comes apart and place in a labelled carton with TV, sound system, remote controls, bed legs, shelf supports, keys to furniture cabinets and manufacturer’s instructions for reassembly of items.
  • Carry all the sentimental and personal items with you in your car. 

2-3 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Contact all relevant authorities to inform them regarding your new address.
  • Return all library books and CD’s.
  • Request your family or friends to babysit children & pets on the moving day.
  • Initiate the change of bank accounts, internet, telephone, gas and electricity connections.
  • Arrange final readings of gas and electricity meters, take out the batteries.
  • Terminate any delivery services, newspapers, automated payment plans and local memberships. Collect dry cleaning.
  • Arrange a locksmith to change the keys on the moving day at your new residence.
  • Spare some time off work on the moving day.
  • Make your new residence will be carefully cleaned before you move.
  • Disassemble outdoor items, children’s’ play equipment.
  • Create a kit with hammer, screwdriver, lightbulbs, nails, wall hooks, pen knife and other essentials and label it as “Handy Kit”.

1 Week Before Moving Day

  • Keep aside bed linens and towels to be used on the first day at your new residence.

  • Get indoor plants watered slightly and packed into plastic-lined boxes.

The Day Before the Move
