BMW was a product of three manufacturing companies that became Bayerische Motorenwerke in 1917. Rapp Motorenwerke and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke were separate companies until the year 1918 until they were merged into a new public limited company. In 1918, Rapp Motorenwerke was reconstructed and was given the name BMW when it absorbed the struggling Bayerische Flugzeugwerke.
During World War 2, BMW manufactured military weapons for Germany. It was not uncommon because that time most of the automobile and other manufacturing companies came under the control of the Nazi Regiment.
