Volkswagen T-Cross SUV India To Debut At Auto Expo 2020

Magical Tattoos

Volkswagen are gearing up to unveil their new T-Cross compact SUV — the first model in the manufacturer’s upcoming India 2.0 project. At the recent 2019 Frankfurt motor show, Klaus Bischoff, head of Volkswagen design, announced they’re tailoring the new car to meet the preferences of Indian customers. By doing so, Volkswagen hope to expand the brand’s popularity across the country. Set for display at the 2020 Auto Expo in New Delhi, the T-Cross will feature slight changes compared to the global models.

A new look for India

Historically, Volkswagen has struggled to build a loyal following in India due to the car’s classically understated design. Indian’s tend to prefer more bling. Now, Volkswagen are adding “a little bit of masala” to this new model while remaining true to the overall look and feel of the Volkswagen brand. Bischoff remarked that while designing the new T-Cross posed challenges, he knows they’ll create a quality, sophisticated car to meet the rightfully-high expectations of Indian customers.

Unique aesthetics

The T-Cross will feature some unique design tweaks. The front styling (including the grille and front bumper area) will be enhanced with extra chrome, so it may resemble the model currently on the market in China. The car will also offer a longer wheelbase (2,651 mm).

Ultimately, this will create a more spacious five-seater with extra legroom for the rear passengers. Inside, the SUV will have plush interiors complete with a sunroof and infotainment system (either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto). A higher ground clearance (205mm) will help the SUV drive smoothly over India’s roads, autobahn-performance.com notes. The axle and suspension setup will also be specifically designed to handle challenging driving conditions.

Petrol options

India’s T-Cross will feature two petrol options. The 130hp, 1.5-litre, four-cylinder EVO TSI petrol engine will have cutting-edge cylinder-deactivation technology to help achieve better fuel economy stats. There’ll also be a smaller, three-cylinder unit — a 115hp, 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine. Volkswagen may also create a CNG powered model. There won’t be a diesel engine available.

At the 2020 Auto Expo, car enthusiasts can also look forward to seeing the T-Cross’s sister product — Skoda’s SUV (called the Kamiq). The Kamiq will share design similarities with the T-Cross. As for pricing, estimates put the T-Cross at between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 15 lakh. If this turns out to be accurate, the T-Cross will become Volkswagen’s first affordable SUV.
