A prime example of this sub-genre is the hit British show Fleabag. Fleabag is a tragicomedy created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, based on her own play. She herself stars as the lead protagonist in this comedy-drama show that released in 2016.

The protagonist of the show is a middle-class woman known as just Fleabag. The plot of the show revolves around her daily struggles with her family, personality, and lifestyle. The series is full of tragedy, accidents, deaths, fallouts, breakups, and yet never fails to make you laugh.

Rachel Bloom plays the role of Rebecca Bunch, who is a lawyer by profession working in New York City. The story kicks off when she walks into her high school boyfriend Josh Chan, who she still has feelings for.

Josh Chan, portrayed by Vincent Rodriguez III, is moving out of the big city and back to his hometown of West Covina. Suffering from depression and anxiety, Rebecca decides to move to West Covina in hopes of finding happiness. Things do not go as per plan, however.
Over the course of 4 seasons, viewers come across heartbreaks, abandonments, suicide attempts at whatnot. The show does all of it while delivering a lot of laugh-worthy instances.

Russian Doll

Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler joined hands to create a perfect mixture of comedy, tragedy and mystery. And the result was a Russian Doll that released in 2019.

The show stars Natasha Lyonne herself playing the lead role of Nadia Vulvokov. A software engineer by profession, Nadia passes away at her 36th birthday party. But there is a twist, Nadia finds out she is stuck in a time loop.

She keeps reliving her 36th birthday and as a result, keeps dying again and again. However, her memories stay intact and she tries to figure out both, the reason for her death and the time loop.

She finds some clues on her journey while finding out she is not the only one stuck in a loop. A lot of shocking mysteries unfold throughout the show that keeps the viewers at the edge while keeping them bursting into laughter, from time to time.

Veronica Mars

Veronica Mars has a unique identity of its own when it comes to TV. It is one of the few noir TV shows with a perfect blend of mystery and comedy. The series features Kristen Bell as the lead protagonist Veronica Mars.

While Veronica seems like a typical high school student, she is a private investigator who goes on investigating murders in free time. Her skills are hereditary given her father Keith Mars is a reputed Sheriff. The life of Veronica takes a wrong turn which starts with her boyfriend Duncan Kane, played by Teddy Dunn dumping him.

Things got even worse as her best friend get murdered and her father gets removed from his post of sheriff. Fighting with her inner demons, Veronica goes to investigating and solving various murders and mysteries. The show takes a lot of dark turns but never lets go of its dark humor.

Veronica Mars originally aired from 2004 to 2007 through seasons. In 2014, a feature-length movie named Veronica Mars was released and turned out to be a critical and commercial success. A whole 11 years after its cancellation, Veronica Mars was revived by Hulu for a final fourth season, 8 episodes long.


Atlanta drama series

Atlanta is a drama series filled with surreal comedy based around the hip-hop culture. The show is based in Atlanta, Georgia, a growing environment for aspiring rappers and tells the story of two such dreamers. The show was created by Donald Glover and stars himself as one of the lead protagonists Earnest Marks.

The second protagonist is Alfred Miles also known as Paper Boi, played by Brian Tyree Henry. Alfred is a dropout and Earnest has just gone through a rough breakup and feels like a failure in the eyes of his family. Both of them aspire to fulfill their dreams with the help of the music.

The show also features Lekeith Stanfield and Zazie Beetz in supportive roles. Atlanta is filled with heartfelt humor, emotional instances, and heartbreaking moments where you really feel for the characters. Please Like Me is an Australian comedy-drama created by Josh Thomas who also plays the main character in the show. What makes Please Like Me different, is that it is inspired by the life of Josh himself.

The story begins with Josh getting dumped by his girlfriend. This leads Josh to a realization of him being homosexual. As if it wasn’t enough shocking to Josh, his mother Rose, played by Debra Lawrence, attempts suicide on the same night. David Roberts plays the role of his father Alan. Other main characters on the show are his friend Tom and his girlfriend Niamh, played by Thomas Ward and Nikit Leigh-Pritchard respectively.

Please Like Me received acclaim and is a fan-favorite worldwide. It is considered to be one of the most tragic TV shows to ever air in not just Australia but globally. first aired in 2013 and ended in 2016 after a total of 4 seasons.

Created by Tig Notaro and Diablo Cody, One Mississippi is one of the best dark comedy-based shows out there. The series is semi-autobiographical inspired by Tig Notaro’s life.

Tig Notaro herself stars in the series as the lead character Tig Bavaro. Tig Bavaro is a radio host working in Los Angeles. She is forced to return to her home Bay St. Lucille, Mississippi after hearing the news of her mother counting her last breath.

After her passing, Tig moves in with her brother Remy, played by Noah Harpster and her stepfather Bill, played by John Rothman. Things are far from better as Tig struggles to keep up while recovering from C. difficile infection and a double mastectomy.

The show revolves around Tig learning about her mother’s life while trying to settle in Bay St. Lucille. One Mississippi was a critical success as well as being popular among fans, receiving a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The End of the F***ing World is a dark comedy based on a comic series of Charles Forsman. The British have always been good at surreal comedy and The End of the F***ing World is no exception.

The show has two main protagonists James and Alyssa. Portrayed by Alex Lawther, James is a teenaged 17 years who thinks of himself as a psychopath. He indulges in killing animals and decides to move on to killing humans when he gets bored. Alyssa is the person who James decides to kill.

Jessica Barden plays the role of Alyssa who is a loudmouth rebellious teen. James and Alyssa decide to run away together, both for different reasons of their own. Alyssa just wants an adventure without worries while James wants to kill her. The rest of the show follows their journey together and how it changes their views and connections with each other.


Run by Vicky Jones

Run, created by Vicky Jones, is one of those rare instances where you can see comedy being paired with a thriller. Run released recently in April this year and hasn’t garnered as much attention as it deserves to.

The show stars Merritt Wever and Domhnall Gleeson take on the roles of Ruby Richardson and Billy Johnson respectively. Ruby Richardson and Billy Johnson dated in school and had made a pact 17 years earlier. The pact stated that if either of them texted the other the words “Run”, and received the same in answer, they would go on a complete tour of America together.

When Ruby, who is getting bored with her life receives the word form Billy, she replies the same without hesitation. What follows is a sweet, adventurous but also depressing rom-com unlike any other before. Run’s first season is currently ongoing with its 7th episode set to release on 24th May.


Succession is a show full of black comedy and drama decorated with satirical themes. Succession was created by Jesse Armstrong who is most known for being the co-creator of another popular comedy-drama Peep Show.

The whole show is centered around the Roy family, ho owns Waystar Royo, a huge media syndicate. The story starts when Logan Roy, the head of the family played by Brian Cox, falls severely ill. The show revolves around the four successors of Logan.

It includes three sons Connor, Kendall, Roman and one daughter Siobhan. Alan Ruck, Jeremy Strong, and Keiran Culkin play the roles of the sons while Sarah Snook plays the only daughter.

Except for Connor, every successor is vying for the power of the head of the family. The whole show is built on these conflicts while keeping humor a mainstay. Succession started airing in 2018 and is currently in its second season.

Dead To Me

Dead To Me shares a few major similarities with Fleabag. One is its tragicomedy genre and second is having a female protagonist. Even better, Dead To Me has two female protagonists.

Dead To Me stars Christina Applegate as Jen Harding and Linda Cardellini, two women going through really hard times. Jen has lost her husband and meets Judy at a grief support group, who herself is facing her own demons.

Jen and Judy find a supportive friend in each other as they try to overcome their mental obstacles together. However, it does not last long as a twist shakes up everything upside down. All of the progress begins to get reversed as Jen goes unhinged while trying to uncover the mysteries of her husband’s death.

The show’s first season aired in May 2019 and received positive reviews. It led to the announcement of a second season that was released in May 2020.


Barry is a combination of dark comedy and crime drama created by Bill Hader and Alec Berg. The show also stars the incredibly talented Bill Hader as the lead protagonist Barry Berkman. Barry is a former marine turned hitman from Ohio. He leaves to Los Angeles for killing someone out of boredom and ends up joining an acting class.

There he meets the teacher Gene Cousineau played by Henry Winkler. He also finds a friend in Sally Reed, an aspiring actress played by Sarah Goldberg. This twisted comedy follows Barry’s journey into a new community with a newly changed mindset.



Kidding is a pure tragicomedy that brilliantly depicts the struggles of life through bleak comedy. The brilliance of the show can be credited to the director-actor pair of Michael Gondry and the great Jim Carrey. The pair had already worked on the masterpiece Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind.

The story of the show revolves around the Piccirillo family, centered more around the young Jeff Piccirillo played by Jim Carrey. Jeff is known for playing Mr. Pickles, an iconic character on a popular children’s TV show. His successful and happy life meets a tragedy when his family implodes and his mental health deteriorates. What follows is a depressing journey through his struggles filled with the darkest of the humor.


Fleabag is a show that resembles the characteristics of human life. Ups & downs, happiness & sadness are all part of it. It’s important to face your problems and it’s important to do so with a smile.
