10 Best Drama Movies like Bohemian Rhapsody To Watch in 2024

Best Movies like Bohemian Rhapsody

Freddie Mercury, right. A story. One of the greatest musicians ever. A guy with a genius and special character. ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ orbits around this guy. It was always going to be challenging to make a film about someone as famous, gifted, and controversial as Mercury was.

There were so many things in the film which might have gone wrong. But, in 135 minutes, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ presents Freddie Mercury in a version that best suited that stature and charisma to a personality. It’s a film made especially for those who love and adore Freddie; it’s not for the skeptics, for sure. And what matters, in the end, is that Queen fans love the movie — despite its shortcomings.

What fans are flocking for is the sheer pleasure of witnessing one of the greatest songs ever coming to fruition. Not to mention Rami Malek ‘s stunning transformation as Freddie is a sight to behold. When you happen to enjoy ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, one quick question comes to mind is are there any movies like Bohemian Rhapsody? Well, one of the easy options is being able to go and watch the movie again. Another choice is to watch ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’-like films.

Here is the list of best movies like Bohemian Rhapsody:

Whiplash:

‘Whiplash’ is a motion picture of raw energy and passion. It’s similar in that sense to Bohemian Rhapsody. Who would have thought a film about jazz music could be so beautifully lively and entertaining? The film portrays the turbulent friendship between a young jazz guitarist and his music tutor, who employs strict approaches to educate students.

Director Damien Chazelle infuses such vigor and energy on the film that you will never be able to take your eyes off for a second. The film takes a wild turn from other motivational movies and thus focuses on the raw, honest truth about success, fame, and hard work and asks you to push yourself constantly without ever feeling content and satisfied with your own accomplishments, however big they might be.

In the lead spot, Miles Teller impresses but it’s J.K. The performance by Simmons which drives and sets the stage for the entire film.

Loud Quite Loud: A Film About the Pixies:

The film can be distinct in sound and presentation, but it can give you valuable perspectives into how the music industry works — in reality, it offers a more accurate view than Bohemian Rhapsody. This film that came out on their ’04 tour after ten years of messy break up for the band is seeing them on.

The film’s documentary-style acts as a close look inside of the band’s touring right up to their final stint. While the post breaks up band members aren’t openly hostile either they don’t come across as a fully functioning unit and the film makes it clear that one shouldn’t expect a reunion. Nonetheless, the band’s professionalism and the fans’ enthusiasm made this film an unforgettable experience.

I’m Not There:

Directed by Todd Haynes, this film is a very unique look at one of the music’s most unique characters – Robert Zimmerman better known as Bob Dylan. The film follows a non-linear narrative and stars a host of extremely talented actors from Cate Blanchett to Christian Bale and Heath Ledger.

They all play in essence the same person as the people they represent are the various representations of Dylan’s own characters he put out in public. A film that will make you reflect and push you to look introspectively much like music from Dylan, this film is an outstanding tribute to the great man.

Aviator:

Available on Netflix | Amazon Prime

A biopic that is somewhat different from ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ but very close. ‘The Aviator’ depicts the life of Howard Hughes, an immensely successful filmmaker and pioneer in aviation whose struggle with his own inner demons begins to take a toll on his personal life and career.

Hughes is a hugely ambitious man and a notorious perfectionist who wouldn’t bear the tiniest flaws in his work and who demands the very best from his workers. However, his personal life is ruined by his strange addiction to germs and OCD which eventually draws him into the deadly chains of madness.

‘The Aviator,’ like most Scorsese biopics, is the story of a man, a human being, told with utmost truthfulness and heartbreaking sincerity in all his flaws, desires, ambitions.

A Star Is Born:

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is produced using the same concept as ‘A Star is Born’ (in the first half). Bradley Cooper as Jack, the veteran singer who deals with depression, and Lady Gaga as Ally, a teenage singer who has lost her vision of being a musician, is amazing at all.

‘A Star Is Born’ excelled with its beautiful music and powerful performances as the heart-breaking, tearjerker, and impactful love story that will stay with you long after you watched it. Years down the lane, people will look back and wonder the same year’s release of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘A Star is Born’ did. Oh yes, they were!

Sing Street:

If after watching ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ you are charged, then there can be no perfect film like ‘Sing Street’ to relax you — and yet not allow music to leave you. ‘Sing Street’ is a heartfelt, funny, and artful coming-of-age film set in Dublin in 1985.

A teenage boy who grew up in Dublin in the 1980s escapes his tense family life by starting a band to impress the girl he likes. The script is extremely clever and the casting couldn’t be cleverer. Ferdia Walsh-Peelo and Lucy Boynton are doing a great job.

The music is very good and it has a really indie look at the entire film. It’s also very lightweight and warm-hearted and funny, but deep and strong.

8 Mile:

The film’s title derives a stretch of road from 8 Mile road that links a predominantly white neighborhood with a predominantly black neighborhood.

The film explores the childhood of Jimmy Smith, the young boy who lives in a trailer in Michigan, a white boy who would then dominate the hip hop scene predominantly starring black people at that time. A great story of struggles, family issues, ‘8 Mile’ remains one of the best movies about “what a musician takes.”

Walk the Line:

This film wraps its plot around the life of Johnny Cash, another popular country singer. Cash may not be as famous as Freddie Mercury, but he has also been a legend — and also self-destructive. ‘Walk the Road’ follows a different route than ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ but all of you will share the same soul bonding.

The film begins with Cash’s childhood and accounts for his brother’s death and how it has affected his life ahead. It also shows Vivienlberto ‘s marriage, his rise as a singer, his relationship with June Carter, another famous celebrity of the time. It is a film that reveals Cash’s genius as well as the dark side. It also reveals how if not handled well success and fame can be a monster.

The Doors:

Available on Netflix | Amazon Prime

I don’t have to explain why ‘The Doors’ is on this list, I think. It is quite obvious. The film, directed by Oliver Stone, follows the band The Doors … surprise, surprise. The film in fact focuses mainly on the lead singer and songwriter-Jim Morrison, the poet in love with whom the sky falls.

Stone’s film, played by Val Kilmer, based its thrust on Jim’s general hedonistic lifestyle rather than getting lost in details. Although the film has received mixed reviews from some quarters, it remains one of the best films on that period’s music scene, and an insightful look into the American poet ‘s mind.

Raging Bull:

How does Raging Bull resemble ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’? Well, gaze closer. This gem of Martin Scorcese is the boxer Jake LaMotta ‘s biographical account, his rise to fame, and his personal struggles. In this frame, which is so finely shot that it acts both as a sports movie and as a heartbreaking drama, Scorcese pours his heart out.

Robert De Niro ‘s performance as Jake LaMotta was dramatic and riveting, rightfully taking home the Best Actor Oscar for this role. This film shot entirely in Black and White, is an inspirational biopic that also ends in an arena — just a different kind of.

Sid and Nancy:

A much darker movie than ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ yet it is worth watching this one. This film, directed by Alex Cox, explores the life of Sid Vicious, better known for being the Sex Pistols bassist but also well-known for his heroin addiction. The film stars Gary Oldman as Sid and Nancy Spungen as Chloe Webb, the heroin-addicted love affair that would destroy two lives.

A dramatic but thorough look into the downward spiral of Sid ‘s life right up to the moment of his death, exploring how the band broke up and worsened Sid’s violent streak as he moved from heroin to meth and a range of drugs. The film shows the wild side of the lives of musicians and the sort of rough wildness that has come to associate with punk music.

Ray:

In Taylor Hackford’s Ray, watching TV star and funny man Jamie Foxx morph into Ray Charles is nothing short of iconic. A whole array of awards and accolades rightly heralded his performance as the legendary singer and pianist.

Through losing sight at the age of seven to learning how to play the piano and being a worldwide megastar, this is basically the life story of Charles, complete with all the ugliness and joy that’s mixed. If you’re just watching one (other) biopic ever, Ray definitely will be.

Freddy Mercury Tribute Show:

The band wanted to pay tribute to their friend after Freddie died, and at the same time raise money for awareness and research on AIDS. Selling 72,000 tickets for the massive talent collaboration to perform at Wembley took just three hours

. There are never any more performances like this-artists from all over have rocked the stage, performing Queen’s classics and their own hits too. Queen + Elton John and Axl Rose ‘s stand-out performances, along with George Michael ‘s performances and a stirring “Under Pressure” rendition with Annie Lennox helped make this show a stirring reminder of how much Queen the world loved.

Wayne’s World:

If you realized Mike Myers as EMI record executive Ray Foster was under a bunch of makeup then you caught a pretty funny joke inside. While playing him “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Foster complains that while rocking out in their car, no-one will want to listen to this song.

Anyone who has seen Wayne’s World will be getting the joke. That film featured Myers’ memorable scene as Wayne and all his friends do exactly what Ray Foster said no kid would want to do.

Almost Famous:

Cameron Crowe may have made his bones with Jerry Maguire, but the grand sweeping letter of love to rock and roll, Almost Famous, is his real claim to fame.

This semi-autobiographical film features William Miller as an ambitious teenager who is beginning to follow his dreams as a Rolling Stone writer. Only imagine becoming a teenager and chasing your favorite bands around, being swept up in all the rock and roll trappings, and on the road experience!

Eddie and the Cruisers:

Freddie Mercury and Queen had a unique, uncompromising vision. So did Eddie Wilson, in Eddie And The Cruisers, and the Parkway Cruisers.

The film portrays a New Jersey band’s fictitious history, whose lead singer didn’t just want to be average, so he took dramatic measures to keep his memories intact. Or has he? This film is a cult favorite among rock and roll fans, featuring John Cafferty And The Beaver Brown Band’s instant-classic “On The Dark Side.”

Rocky:

Available on Netflix | Amazon Prime

Of course, you can see why ‘Rocky’ is on that list. This analogy is not a far-fetched one. Rocky is a film that knows its audience’s pulse, and despite how eye-catching sentimental and exploitative it is in places, it emerges as an endearingly sincere effort to move audiences with the sheer power of hope and endurance.

‘Rocky’ tells the rich story of a struggling boxer with a classic rag whose life takes a turn when he gets a chance to fight champion Apollo Creed. Sylvester Stallone makes you fervently root for his character, and that in itself is a huge compliment to Rocky Balboa’s touchingly honest performance.
