Mayanti Langer is one of the leading female sports journalist of India who has hosted sports tournaments like the 2010 Commonwealth Games, 2011 Cricket World Cup, 2018 Indian Premier League, etc. She hosts pre-match, post-match and half-match time of mostly cricket matches. Langer rose to fame after she hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup broadcast in India and became one of the few leading female journalists who has attained esteemed levels of success in such short span of time. With dashing looks and abundance of talents, Mayanti has always made her appearance on the television memorable. She has not only gathered a huge fan following but has also set an example for all aspiring women to shape their dreams into reality. The sports industry is always looked at as a playground of men where women exist but only on the fringes. Women like Mayanti Langer have turned this image around. As of today, her name is being counted among the most famous male sports anchors like Harsha Bhogle and Samir Kochhar.

Mayanti was born on 8 February, 1985 in Delhi, India and she is 33 years old as of today.

Family

Mayanti belongs to an upper middle class Indian Christian family. Her father Major Sanjiv Langer was an Army officer and her mother, Preminda Langer was a renowned school teacher. Because Mayanti’s father was posted with the United Nations in the United States, she spent most of her childhood in the US. While in school, Mayanti grew fond of football and played in her school football team. Even while in college, Mayanti never missed a single chance to play football. She also trained for football at the Super Soccer Academy, Delhi.

Education

Mayanti completed her schooling from Shriram School, Delhi and earned her BA Honours degree from Hindu College, University of Delhi. She then went on to pursue post graduation.

Career

Mayanti always aspired to be a graphic designer. Her plans to be graphic designer changed after she was offered to be the guest anchor for a broadcast of FIFA  beach football while she was still in college. This was her first major breakthrough as a sports anchor and she did an amazing job. She then went on to work with the Indian Youth Soccer association (IYSA) league in Delhi. Freshly out of college, Langer earned herself the post of a host and associate producer for Football Cafe on Zee Sports which was a huge leap in her career. Langer then became a regular at Zee and went on to host several interviews during pre-match and post-match hours during football matches. According to an interview she gave in 2007, she worked for straight 12 hours for Zee and learnt a lot about sports, TV anchoring and TV production.

Mayanti subsequently went on to host the Nehru Cup held at New Delhi and later did the coverage for Indian Cricket League aired on Zee Sports. Ever since then, Langer has hosted major tournaments like:

  • 2010 Commonwealth Games held at New Delhi
  • 2011 Cricket World Cup
  • India vs South Africa Cricket test series in 2013 with Ten Sports
  • Champions League Cricket tournament, 2014
  • Indian Super League Football tournament TV broadcast in 2014
  • Cricket World Cup 2015 for Star Sports.
  • Indian Premier League, 2018

In total, Langer has hosted 6 World Cups for different sports each time.

Relationships

Mayanti married the love of her life, Indian Cricketer Stuart Binny in September 2012 after a long time of dating. Stuart Bunny plays cricket for India at national and international levels. He is the son of famous Indian Cricketer, Roger Binny.

According to Langer, she didn’t know that Stuart was an Indian cricketer. She was introduced to Stuart by one of her producers from where onwards, their love story took off. Mayanti is 4 months older than Stuart.

Mayanti is very active on social media where you can find some interesting glimpses into her personal life. She and her husband seem very much smitten and Mayanti regularly updates her fans by posting her cute pictures with her husband. They are often seen going on romantic dinner dates and holding hands and never shy away from posing for the paparazzi.

Recently Langer was trolled by some people for wearing too small skirts and high heels on the social media. Langer handle the criticism in a very poised manner and stated in an interview, “What’s your problem if I want to wear 5-inches heels? I wear them because I’m comfortable in them. No one has forced me to wear them and that is my choice.” She later added, “So this IPL, I did everything. We wore pants, we wore suits, we wore blazers, we wore mini-skirts, we wore dresses, we wore every single thing and it didn’t make a difference.”

A few months ago, a Twitter user asked out Langer for a dinner date openly to which Langer replied, “Thank you! My husband and I would love to join you.” Her response instantly attracted attention and Langer was appreciated for her subtly yet bold reply.

Langer will be attending the the world’s largest gaming festival DreamHack on 22 December 2018 at NESCO Mumbai.
